Take-Two Interactive is willing to support legacy titles as long as there is player demand. Read on to learn more about the future of GTA Online.

GTA Online Might Survive After GTA 6’s Launch

Take-Two Will Support GTA Online if There’s Demand

Some fans might wonder what happens to GTA Online after GTA 6’s launch. Though Rockstar Games has no definite answer, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick offers a glimpse of hope for the game in an IGN interview on February 14, 2025.

Zelnick is not open to disclosing any decisions from Take-Two about particular titles, but he provided a great analogy for the GTA Online concern. “I’m going to speak theoretically only because I’m not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn’t been made,” Zelnick said. “But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles.”

Zelnick pointed out that NBA 2K Online was launched in China last 2012, then launched its sequel in 2017. Despite the sequel’s release, Zelnick shared that they “did not sunset Online 1,” since both games have massive audiences in China. To add, Zelnick stated, “So we’ve shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them.”

Considering his statement, Rockstar and Take-Two might keep GTA Online alive as long as people are playing the game, even when GTA 6 launches. Additionally, GTA Online has been a cash cow for over a decade, and it would be trivial to suddenly let go of this game amidst its astounding longevity and financial success.

Rockstar Games may Create a Platform like Roblox and Fortnite for GTA 6

Speaking of GTA Online, Rockstar is reportedly making a similar version for GTA 6 but with user-generated content (UGC), according to Digiday on February 17, 2025. This will make GTA 6’s online version similar to Robox and Fortnite.

According to Digiday’s report, “Rockstar Games has been in discussions with top Roblox and Fortnite creators, as well as dedicated GTA content creators, about the potential to create custom experiences inside the upcoming game.” This pertains to the ability of players to modify the game’s asset and environment and even add their own to create a unique visual sandbox experience, which is commonly known as UGC.

Aside from the potential of increasing GTA 6’s exposure to a wider audience via content creators and modders, this would allow Rockstar and Take-Two to rake in more money by having a cut via “virtual item sales or through revenue programs.” Digiday contacted Rockstar Games, but the company has yet to respond to their request.

Despite being a 14-year-old game, GTA 5 and its online counterpart are still the third most-watched game on Twitch. With the reported plan to bring in modders, and eventually content creators, to the forefront of the GTA 6 online version, the game can also generate a lot of buzz across different platforms.
